Creamy and delicious…and Mozzarella makes it right!
Hummus is always a crowd pleaser. The creamy rich goodness that’s not only good for your health, but it is also the perfect appetizer and makes for a scrumptious side dish too. Whether you want a light meal, a quick snack, or a party pick-me-up, hummus is a tried-and-true go-to that never lets you down.
If you are not familiar with the dip/spread, here’s the short of it. According to Top Food Facts, “The word hummus, (which has various spellings) is an Arabic word meaning ‘chickpea.’ Hummus is a Levantine Arab dip or spread that is made from chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans) that have been cooked and mashed, then blended with tahini (a paste made from sesame seeds), olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and salt. Several cuisine-related sources speak of a folklore tale in which hummus is described as one of the oldest known prepared foods.”
Having been around for centuries, hummus’ popularity never wanes. And with more flavors and variations than ever, its availability and demand are only growing. Lucky for us, the chickpea is as chic as ever! Whether served traditionally like you see in many Middle Eastern restaurants and homes or with a modern twist, hummus lovers are always in the mood for a helping… and seconds if they’re hungry enough.
As Food Republic explains, “Traditionally, hummus is served on a large plate, usually drizzled with olive oil and herbs and accompanied by fresh pita, tomato, onion, cucumber salad and maybe some falafel.” As delicious as that sounds, there’s no “right” way to help yourself to hummus. Scoop some on top of a fresh salad for added protein and flavor. Spread it onto crackers or toast for a quick bite. Fill a dish with hummus and dip fresh crisp veggies. Or use as a spread for sandwiches in place of mayo or mustard. Heck, you can simply enjoy hummus straight from the spoon!
You do not have to be a vegetarian to appreciate the goodness of hummus, but those who stick to a vegetarian/vegan diet love that hummus is healthful and filling. Its decadent quality is appealing, and the many recipes make old feel like new every time a creative batch is born. “Plain” is always a classic but these days, flavors like eggplant, garlic, spinach, roasted pepper, artichoke, and pine nut elevate hummus to new heights. Cooks and chefs experiment with various mix-ins to create their own style – some going for something smooth and light while others opting for thick and chunky. But no matter how its prepared, hummus is always a home run!
